It’s a no-brainer that the ‘first-past-the-post system of voting is unfair … indecent. It leads to the smaller parties getting a wildly disproportionately small percentage of seats, compared with the proportion of the total number of votes secured nationally. It’s manifestly unfair - biased in favour of the big parties. In a decent society, this MUST change. In a decent Parliament, it WOULD change, because no unbiased assembly would reject this reform.

The key to achieving many of the aims of Common Decency is to change the voting system.
The vote for the individual has to be separated from the vote for the Party.
The MP in my constituency is a good person and good MP – he should be in parliament. I would vote for him but I don’t want to lend my support to the policies his party promotes. I will probably vote for the party with the policies I support, even if the candidate is inferior, unhappy in the knowledge my vote won't make any difference anyway. It's a rotten voting system.
For reasons of simple democracy we should have a PR voting system. But choosing the right system is crucial.
We still need parties – the short hand ‘brand’ for manifesto of policies and a team to promote them.
However the vote for the MP should not be linked to the vote for the party. We should be able to elect the best person as the local MP.
DPR Voting is a PR system that allows the voter two votes, one for the MP and one for the Party. You can vote for the best person (regardless of party) and the best party. Unlike AMS or MMP there are no party list MPs - Every MP is a constituency MP. This shifts influence over the MP away from the party whips and towards the electorate, and encourages more independent minded MPs.
Voting and counting is simple and it would be simple to introduce.

Please don't waste time on too much detail. It all follows from the core CD proposition that the present system has been broken, and is presently in the hands of a particularly unpleasant batch of self-seekers who have barely any experience outside the bubble of media and politics.
But also don't forget that Cameron inherited the mother of all shambles - and no money. And then he has been forced to work with the now obviously treacherous LibDems. And waht happened to the old idea of "majority rule"? That seems have bene dumped in favour of rule buy a collection of pushy minorities who could never aspire to a majoriyt on their own. As the last round of EU referenda showed "we will keep having elections until we get the result we want.."
Cameron has managed to show poor people judgement where people around him like Coulson, Brookes and Shapps are concerned. Maybe he should have gone to Grammar School where he would have encountered a much broader cross section of the community and had his instincts and people skills honed.
But PR and coalitions perpetuate this shambolic state of affairs. Which is why the EU seems to love them so much - a return to 2 party politics would give the people a much bigger and better say in the way things work. Look at Greece... it was almost an outright win – and the first thing they do is tell the German Queen bee and hive to get stuffed. Nice one…
The greatest let down of the coalition was the farcical vote on AVI. 1st Past the Post is a ridiculous system, that only has any merit (limited, even then) when there are only two parties. Simple math...... let's say a constituency has 100 voters and 10 candidates..... 2 of parties get 9 votes, rest get 10 except the 'winning' party, which gets 12. Is that democracy??? 88% of that constituency voted for SOMEONE ELSE.
Like everyone knows, Proportional representation is a no brainer!! I feel so exasperated with this though!! We have all been saying this for the last 10 years but still we are no nearer to having it happen!! How is it going to happen when the only people who can make it happen are the very people who do not want it. Arrrggggghhhhh!!!!!!! I feel so dam angry about this!! We need an army of high profile names like Brian championing this!! Richard Branson!? Where are you?! Speak up Man!! There must be many high profile powerful celebs who can get on board with Brian!! A highly respected Conservative MP coming out, pledging allegiance to Common Decency because he does not believe in the system anymore would really help. There must be one out there. Who are You?! Show some Guts!!! Come on! We need this! NOW!!!!
